The second largest Securities and Exchange Commission Award was granted to a client of the Labaton Sucharow LLP firm. With an award of seventeen million dollars, the client opted to remain anonymous, but their information was anything but underappreciated.

A whistleblower is a person who expresses their concern over illicit activities happening within a specific industry. From there, these people provide further insight by gathering information for a whistleblower attorney who is willing to take on the case. Given that these whistleblowers often opt to remain anonymous, the work of whistleblower attorneys is undoubtedly difficult as they must prove many bits of information without a physical witness. Essentially, they must answer who provided the information and how this case came to be without providing a concrete answer. Their determination to expose discrepancies in the financial industry is especially difficult to fight against.

Jordan A. Thomas was the attorney on this specific, award-winning case. “My client blew the whistle when others in the financial services industry were content to remain silent and allow investors to be harmed,” said the SEC whistleblower lawyer in regards to the case. Perhaps what makes this field of law so prominent is not the prospective awards to be granted but the dignity that is restored to corrupt industries.

A SEC whistleblower attorney focuses on fighting to restore justice to unjust fields. The financial industry, for example, is among the most corrupt in the entire world. Too often, higher ups are lining their own pockets with the money of those who took a risk in investment or who were simply attempting to better their lives financially by investing. When somebody on the inside demonstrates the courage to speak out about something that affects so many, it is the responsibility of the attorney to build the case, support the anonymity of their client, and to set an example for people who have even considered committing financial wrongdoings.

Decisively, some are uncertain on how to feel about an industry intent on exposing people. On one hand, they understand the importance but, on the other, the anonymity is bothersome to them. Alas and regardless of what standpoint people take, whistleblowers are crucial and the attorneys who fight for them and their cause are fundamental in restoring an honest balance to the world.
