Only recently The New York Times did a story on the stunning donation made by Hungarian-American hedge fund manager and billionaire Mr. George Soros to his charity organization. The donation involved a transfer of over $18 billion from Mr. George Soros’ private fund to his charity organization, Open Society Foundation. Analysts have termed this act as one of the biggest transfer of wealth from a single individual to another charity organization. They go further to deduce that it is second in the world coming just a single position behind the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which happens to be the largest in the world. Open Society Foundation is a charity organization whose main objective is to promote and defend human rights and democracy all over the world. For more than 3 decades now, Open Society Foundations have managed to set up shop in over 120 countries all around the world where they support groups that are in line with their mission which involves fighting for equality in a discriminative world especially for LGBT people and not forgetting racial discrimination from the authorities such as the police who have in several instances been accused of applying excessive force on unarmed civilians, judicial officers and officers of government and citizens alike.
The Open Society Foundations are not only involved in political and governance matters only but also in charitable works that involve day to day suffering of the populace. Some of the most recent examples of such events are the Ebola outbreak of 2014 in which Open Society Foundations went out of their way to help set up treatment centers for the suffering victims. In the same year, the Open Society Foundations also financed the building of a facility for the Roma art and culture. In 2016, after the United States presidential elections in which Mr. Soros wholeheartedly supported the Democratic Party candidate Mrs. Hillary Clinton both individually and financially, sporadic incidents of acts of violence were reported to have broken out in several parts of the country especially targeting LGBT people while some other incidents being racially motivated, Mr. George Soros moved in quickly and donated $10 million to several groups in an effort to help stop the menace.
As Mr. George Soros is, on one hand, doing his best to make a difference in an unjust world, his antagonists are busy trying to degrade the importance of such philanthropic acts. In an article published by the Atlantic entitled “George Soros and the Demonization of Philanthropy” that elaborates the contradiction that while George Soros is championing noble causes around the world all his opponents can do is attack his acts of philanthropy by coming up with some twisted conspiracy theories. However, this cannot deter Mr. Soros from his resolve to make the world a better place as he knows first-hand what it feels like to be on the other side having been brought up in a Nazi-occupied Hungary. Mr. Soros later went to the United Kingdom and later the United States where he made his fortune.
